On this day in 1965 Prince Monolulu died.
He was a course tipster and character whose real name was Peter Carl Mackay. He was an institution on the British racing scene from the 1920s until the time of his death. He was particularly noticeable for his brightly coloured clothing; as a tipster, one of his best known phrases was the cry "I gotta horse!", which was subsequently the title of his memoirs.
Monolulu became famous after tipping Spion Kop in the 1920 Derby, which won at odds of approximately 16/1. He made about £ 8,000 (over £400,000 today).
Legend says he choked in hospital on a chocolate given to him by journalist Jeffrey Bernard.
