ON THIS DAY - 4th FEBRUARY
On this day in 1937 the first sports commentary took place on the BBC. It was a boxing match at Alexandra Palace and the commentator was Harry Mallin, himself a former middleweight champion and Olympic gold medallist.
In the 1920 Summer Olympics he won a gold medal at middleweight and was the first to successfully defend an Olympic title in two consecutive games.
He died at a nursing home in Lewisham in November 1969.
